Mramorje (Serbia)
Mramorje, also known as Bagruša, is a medieval necropolis of stećak tombstones located in Perućac, Serbia. It is one of the best-preserved necropolises in the region and holds the largest concentration of stećak monuments in Serbia. Dating back to the 14th century, the necropolis is situated between the Drina River and the main road that follows its course, at the entrance to the settlement. Recognized for its historical and cultural significance, Mramorje was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016. Despite its protected status, the site faces threats from natural erosion due to its proximity to the Drina River, as well as urban expansion in Perućac.
Geography of Stećci Mramorje
Mramorje is located at 43°58’44.5″ N, 19°27’17.7″ E, at an altitude of approximately 280 meters above sea level. The necropolis lies within the Drina River valley, in the western part of Serbia, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The surrounding landscape is characterized by a humid continental climate, karstic terrain, and significant hydrological influences from the Drina River.
The Necropolis of Stećci Mramorje
Originally, the necropolis contained around 200 stećci, though recent surveys have documented 93 remaining tombstones, classified as slab tombstones (46), gabled tombstones with a base (18), gabled without a base (10), chest-shaped with a base (7), chest-shaped without (10) a base and 2 amorphous tombstones
Many stećci have shifted or sunk into the soil over time. A few have been relocated to museum collections, including two plain examples in the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade and one in the National Museum in Užice. The tombstones are arranged in regular rows, predominantly oriented west-east, reflecting medieval burial customs. While the majority are finely cut with no inscriptions, a small number of feature simple decorative motifs, such as circles, crescent moons, swords, and shields.
