Overview
The second day of the STECCI Summer Academy 3, held on 22 September 2026 at Hotel Mediteran in Budva, focused on the cultural, social and economic significance of stećci, with particular attention to sustainable tourism, cultural routes and participatory heritage management.
The programme opened with contributions from the University of Donja Gorica, the University of Sarajevo, the Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI), and the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation of Montenegro. Two major panel discussions then brought together representatives and experts from the University of Sarajevo, University of Novi Sad, University of Montenegro, Arts Academy in Split, University of Donja Gorica, the Old Royal Capital Cetinje, the Municipality of Žabljak, and other cultural heritage and public-sector institutions.
The first panel examined cultural tourism, sustainable development and the economic valorisation of stećci, while the second addressed their role in cultural tourism and their potential connection with European Cultural Routes.
The programme also included a lecture on the artistic, symbolic and communicative dimensions of stećci, as well as sessions led by ZSI on participatory social sciences and humanities methods, socially inclusive heritage management and co-creation approaches.
The day concluded with a hands-on workshop on creative industries and innovative cultural tourism projects, followed by an introduction to interdisciplinary landscape mapping of stećci cultural heritage and a final reflection on the main outcomes of the day.
