The Saint-Jean cemetery in Caen, Normandy, France, is one of the abandoned graveyards in this city. Opened in the 1780s, originally out of the city, it is located at the heart of an ancient quarry of the famous “stone of Caen”- a limestone used since Roman times, employed on a large scale, for example in Canterbury cathedral. With the growth of the city, it is now totally surrounded by buildings and abandoned for decades. Covered by trees, in a quiet area, it gives a stillness impression to passers-by. It is protected since 1939. This site was chosen because of its proximity to the sea, its easiness of access, and the fact that the limestone of Caen, a reference material, was directly mined on the site. The climate type is Cfb.
