WP3 Team Conducts Condition Assessment of Stećci Sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina, July 2024.

In July 2024, a team from WP3 visited four Stećci sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina to assess their condition. This visit marked the first condition assessment trip under Task 3.3 of the project. The team included experts from various institutions: Katharina Fuchs, Marija Milchin, and Farkas Pintér from UAA; Siniša Bizjak, Krešimir Bosnić, and Miona Miliša from UMAS; Stefan Simon and Abdelrhman Fahmy from SPK and Saida Ibragić, Nusret Drešković, and Edin Bujak from UNSA. Véronique Vergès-Belmin, a member of the project’s Quality Advisory Board, also joined the site visits, bringing her extensive and valuable experience to the team.

During the trip, the team evaluated four sites, starting with displaced Stećci at the museum in Sarajevo. Subsequent visits included Kopošići, Križevići, and Dugo Polje. These locations, situated in remote areas, presented unique decay patterns due to their specific environments. The team employed various analytical methods, including visual inspection, in-situ tests, and decay mapping, to understand the deterioration mechanisms and capture the on-site situation effectively.

The University of Sarajevo played a crucial role in organizing and supporting the trips. Special thanks to our colleagues for their invaluable insights and hospitality, making the experience smooth and memorable.
