Ravanjska vrata

Kupres, located in western Bosnia, encompasses four high karst fields—Kupreško, Rilićko, Ravanjsko, and Vukovsko—surrounded by mountains including Vitorog and Raduša. Named after its administrative center, Kupres has a harsh environment but reveals traces of significant historical settlement.

The region is notable for its stećci, with over 1,000 monuments found across more than 40 necropolises. Slabs and chests dominate, while gabled roofs and cross-shaped stećci are relatively rare. These necropolises are often situated near old roads or prehistoric tumuli, indicating long-term burial practices. One particularly significant site is the Ravanjska vrata necropolis, located in a narrow passage connecting the Vukovsko and Ravanjsko fields.

Ravanjska vrata, flanked by elevated prehistoric fortified settlements, has been a key passage since Roman and medieval times. Despite its challenging conditions for agriculture, it was utilized for livestock grazing, hinting at a medieval pastoral community that left behind the Upper and Lower necropolises.

The Lower necropolis at Ravanjska vrata features 43 stećci, including 20 slabs, 20 chests, and three gabled roofs, many of which are decorated and well-integrated into their surroundings. The Upper necropolis, located 50 meters to the west on Crljenica, contains 25 stećci, featuring a variety of motifs such as rosettes and tournament scenes.

The Ravanjska vrata stećci near the village of Mušići are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for their unique value. Unfortunately, none possess epitaphs, leaving the identities of the deceased and artisans who crafted these remarkable monuments unknown.
